Water Watch Organizer
Description: We all want to make a difference. But too many jobs require us to leave our conscience at home.
If you want to put your ideals front and center, consider a job with NJPIRG’s and AmeriCorps’ NJ Community Water Watch program. Our agenda: we address real environmental problems facing communities and get meaningful results.
Water Watch was founded over 12 years ago to deal with the serious water quality problems we are facing in New Jersey. Between a legacy of industrial dumping, and our rampant development, New Jersey's waterways are at risk, with 75% unsafe for fishing and swimming. Water Watch works to organize college students and community members to become active stewards of their local waterways.
NJ Community Water Watch is a statewide program working on 13 campuses to solve water pollution problems by organizing college student and the surrounding communities around their local waterways.
Water Watch Organizers work to recruit a group of interns and volunteers from the student community on campus. They train these students in stewardship skills, and work with them to run a local clean water program including organizing river cleanups, conducting environmental education in classrooms, monitoring local waterways, and doing outreach to the local community.
Qualifications:
We are looking for motivated individuals who are willing to work hard and commit themselves to getting results. We value experience with campus groups or student government, academic achievement, public interest commitment, and outstanding verbal, written and leadership skills. But most of all, we look for people who find a way to make a difference.
Benefits:
Water Watch Organizers commit to a 9-month term of National Service as Americorps members. AmeriCorps members receive an $11,100 living stipend throughout their term while completing a minimum of 1700 hours of service in their communities. At the end of their service they receive a $4,725 education award which can be applied to education loans, or saved for up to seven years to offset future tuition costs. The position also includes loan forbearance and basic health care.
Locations:
We are hiring for positions throughout NJ – New Brunswick, Newark, Montclair, Camden, Princeton, and Toms River.
How To Apply:
Apply by contacting Program Director Liz Glynn directly. Email a resume and cover letter to liz@njwaterwatch.org or call (732)249-4108 with any questions.
