Education Ambassador
Description: The Education Ambassador Internship is designed to give college students practical experience in education, conservation, and animal care and the opportunity to gain a broad background of the Zoo community and how it operates. You will have the opportunity to immerse yourself in the sights and sounds of the Zoo everyday while providing an educational experience to our guests.
• Animal Care & Handling. Interns assist in caring for more than 60 animals in the education collection, primarily reptiles and amphibians. Responsibilities include feeding, cleaning, and keeping track of the animals’ medical records. Interns will also learn animal handling skills in preparation for frequent live animal presentations.
• Diamondback Terrapin Rescue. Populations of these animals have been declining due to loss of habitat, commercial crab trapping, and being killed by automobiles while in search of a nest site. In conjunction with Richard Stockton College and the Wetlands Institute, the Zoo is raising hatchlings to be returned to their natural habitat, the New Jersey wetlands. Interns care for the animals, maintain water quality, keep accurate records, and assist to release the animals (this program is seasonal and release time is primarily in the summer).
• Animal Presentation. Interns increase their animal handling, education and presentation experience by presenting Live Animal Shows with reptiles and working with a variety of invertebrates. The formal yet fun atmosphere of the Live Animal Shows allows interns to teach visitors of all ages about reptile adaptations and natural history facts of the animals presented in the show. The invertebrate stations allow for informal conversations with visitors about adaptations and behaviors exhibited by these unusual animals. Interns are responsible for the safe transportation and handling of animals involved in all programs.
• Zoo-wide Interpretation. Through formal presentations, informal conversations and research activities, interns will interpret many of the daily activities that take place in the Zoo. Interns participate in daily talks and interpretation of animal feeding and training demonstrations throughout the Zoo. Interns also staff “Exploration Stations” strategically located throughout the Zoo. Each station is equipped with interactive activities or biofacts (skins, skulls, teeth, etc.) relating to a specific animal and its conservation. Interns encourage visitors to participate, touch, and ask questions that will increase their knowledge of the animals in the Zoo.
This unpaid internship is open to students of any major with at least a 2.5 GPA. Internships run throughout the year and the application process is continuous. The internship lasts at least 10-12 weeks and interns must be available 8 hours a week during the fall, winter and spring season, and 24 hours a week during the summer season.
To apply for this internship, please submit a letter of interest stating which internship you are applying for and why, a detailed resume, a reference letter or letter of recommendation and a copy of your college transcripts.
